How to Get a Marriage License in Irion County

Both applicants go to the Irion County Clerk's office together. You fill out the application, show your IDs, and pay the fee. The whole process can be done in one visit if you bring everything you need.

What each applicant must bring:

  • Valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID)
  • Social Security number (know it; a card is helpful but may not be required)
  • Certified copy of divorce decree if you were divorced within the last 30 days
  • Court order if either applicant is under 18 (required since September 1, 2017)

No blood test is required. No residency in Texas or Irion County is needed. The license is valid anywhere in Texas. After you pick it up, the 72-hour clock starts. Plan so your ceremony date falls at least three full days after you get the license.

The state application form asks for full legal names, dates of birth, places of birth, and Social Security numbers. If either applicant was married before, the form asks how and when that marriage ended. This is standard under Texas Family Code Section 2.004. The clerk reviews the form and issues the license once everything is in order.

72-Hour Waiting Period and Fees

Texas requires a 72-hour waiting period from when the license is issued to when the ceremony can happen. This comes from Texas Family Code Section 2.204. Get your license on a Tuesday morning and you can hold the ceremony no earlier than Friday morning.

The wait can be waived in a few cases. Active duty military members can skip it with proper documentation. A judge can grant a waiver for cause. And couples who finish the Twogether in Texas premarital course skip the wait entirely and also pay a lower fee. The standard fee in Irion County is about $82. With the Twogether certificate, it drops to around $22. The program is eight hours and offered at sites across Texas.

The license expires 90 days after it is issued. Miss that window and you have to start over. Most couples apply one to two weeks before the ceremony. That gives time to work through any issues without cutting it too close to the expiration date.

Irion County Marriage Records

Once the ceremony is done, your officiant must sign the license and return it to the Irion County Clerk within 30 days. Texas Family Code Section 2.206 requires this. The clerk then records it as a permanent public document. After that you can request certified copies for legal uses like name changes or benefits enrollment.

Certified copies cost about $21 each through the county clerk. Request them in person or by mail. The Texas DSHS Vital Statistics unit also maintains a statewide index of marriages from 1966 forward. A verification letter from DSHS costs $20 and confirms a record exists, though it is not a certified copy. For full certified documentation, always request from the issuing county clerk.

Older Irion County marriage records are held at the clerk's office and are part of the permanent public record. Genealogists and researchers can submit written requests if they cannot visit in person. The clerk's staff can advise on how to request historical records by mail.
