How to Get a Marriage License in Zavala County
Both applicants must appear together at the Crystal City courthouse. The process cannot be done online or by mail. With the right documents, most couples finish in under an hour.
Each applicant must bring:
- Valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID
- Social Security number for each applicant
- Certified divorce decree if divorced within the last 30 days
- Court order if either applicant is under 18
No residency in Texas is required. No blood test is needed. The license works anywhere in Texas once issued. Just go together, show your IDs, fill out the form, and pay the fee. The state application form under Texas Family Code Section 2.004 asks for full legal names, birth information, and prior marriage history. If you have been married before, note when and how the prior marriage ended. False information on this form is a criminal offense in Texas.
The 72-Hour Wait and License Fees
Once the Zavala County Clerk issues your license, a 72-hour period begins before any ceremony can take place. This comes from Texas Family Code Section 2.204. Get the license on a Monday morning and you cannot marry before Thursday morning. Factor this into your wedding plans. Apply early enough that the wait clears before your ceremony date.
Three exceptions exist to waive the wait. Active duty military can apply for a waiver. A judge can issue a written waiver for good cause. Couples who complete the Twogether in Texas premarital education program waive the wait automatically and also pay about $22 instead of the standard $82. The course runs 8 hours and covers topics that prepare couples for married life. Providers are listed at twogetherintexas.com.
The 90-day window starts when the license is issued. No renewals. No extensions. If it expires, you apply again and pay again. Most couples apply one to two weeks before their ceremony date. That gives enough time past the 72-hour wait and keeps the license well within the 90-day limit.
Informal marriage declarations are available through the Zavala County Clerk as well. Both parties must appear. Ask the clerk's office about the current fee for that service when you call ahead.
