How to Get Your Marriage License in Georgetown
Getting a marriage license in Georgetown requires both applicants to visit the Williamson County Clerk together. The application process is quick when you come prepared. Most couples finish in under an hour on an average day.
Each applicant must bring:
- Valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID)
- Social Security number (you must know it; having your card helps but is not always required)
- Certified divorce decree if you were divorced in the last 30 days
- Court order if either applicant is under 18
The application form collects full legal names including maiden names, dates of birth, places of birth, and Social Security numbers. It also asks whether either person has been married before and how those marriages ended. This is a required part of the state application under Texas Family Code Section 2.004. All information must be accurate.
No blood test is required. No residency requirement exists. You do not have to live in Georgetown or Williamson County to apply here. The license is valid for use anywhere in Texas. Once the ceremony is done, the officiant must sign the license and return it to the Williamson County Clerk within 30 days as required by Texas Family Code Section 2.206.
72-Hour Wait, Fees, and Twogether in Texas
Texas requires a 72-hour waiting period between when the license is issued and when the ceremony can take place. This rule is in Texas Family Code Section 2.204. Apply at least three full days before your ceremony. If you pick up the license on a Wednesday afternoon, you can't hold the ceremony until Saturday afternoon at the earliest.
The Twogether in Texas premarital education program lets qualifying couples skip the 72-hour wait and pay a reduced license fee. In Williamson County, the standard fee is roughly $82. With a valid Twogether in Texas certificate, the fee drops to about $22. However, even with the certificate, Georgetown applicants pay an additional $11 local preservation fee. That makes the total with the certificate approximately $33. Active duty military can also skip the 72-hour wait without completing the course.
The license is good for 90 days from the day it is issued. If you do not hold your ceremony within that window, you lose the license and must start over. Plan your application date with your ceremony date in mind to leave enough time for both the waiting period and any scheduling changes.
Georgetown Marriage Records
After your ceremony, the officiant must return the signed marriage license to the Williamson County Clerk within 30 days. Once recorded, it becomes part of the permanent public record for Williamson County. You can request certified copies from the clerk's office.
Certified copies are needed for legal name changes, updating Social Security records, adding a spouse to benefits, and immigration matters. Copies in Williamson County cost approximately $21 each. You can request them in person at the Georgetown office or by mail. Include full names, the date of the ceremony, and payment with any mailed request.
For statewide records searches, the Texas DSHS Vital Statistics unit keeps an index going back to 1966. They can issue a verification letter confirming a marriage is on file, but that is not the same as a certified copy from the county clerk.
